['prɪtʃɪt], Sir (seit 1975) V. S. (Victor Sawdon), englischer Schriftsteller und Journalist, * Ipswich 16. 12. 1900, ✝ London 21. 3. 1997; Zeitungskorrespondent in Frankreich, Spanien und den USA; 1928-65 Literaturkritiker, 1946-78 Herausgeber des »New Statesman«. Er wurde bekannt durch Romane und insbesondere durch Kurzgeschichten, die wegen ihres knappen Stils, der präzisen Beobachtung grotesker Situationen und skurriler Charaktere sowie ihrer subtil-ironischen Sicht zu den Meisterwerken der Gattung zählen. Pritchett war 1974-76 Präsident des internationalen P. E. N.
